How to repair a damaged PDF
A PDF that will not open is usually damaged in its structure, not in its content. The most common damage is a broken cross-reference table — the index at the end of the file that tells a reader where each page lives. It breaks when a download is interrupted, a transfer is cut short, or a program crashes while saving. The pages themselves are often still intact; only the index is wrong, so no reader can find them. This tool rebuilds the file: it reads every page it can find and writes a fresh, valid PDF with a correct index.
Drop the damaged PDF and press Repair. The tool tries to open the file and rebuild it. If it succeeds, you download a repaired PDF. If the file is too damaged to read — pages missing, data truncated in the middle — the tool will say so instead of giving you a broken file. This is a best-effort repair, not a guarantee: it fixes common structural damage, and it cannot recover data that is actually gone.
A practical tip: always keep the original damaged file, even after a repair succeeds, and check the repaired PDF page by page — a repair can occasionally drop a page it could not read, and it is better to know that now than after you have deleted the original. If the repaired file is missing pages, the damage was in the page data itself, and no browser tool can bring it back; the only fix then is the original source of the document.
Everything runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your device. There is no daily limit.
How to use this tool
- 1Drop the damaged PDF onto the page.
- 2Press Repair PDF.
- 3If the repair succeeds, download the fixed PDF and check it page by page.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of damage can this fix?
Common structural damage, especially a broken cross-reference table — the index at the end of the file. That is the damage caused by interrupted downloads and crashed saves.
Can it recover a PDF with missing pages?
No. If page data itself is missing or truncated, no tool can bring it back. The tool will say so instead of giving you a broken file.
Should I delete the original damaged file after a repair?
No. Keep it, and check the repaired PDF page by page first. A repair can occasionally drop a page it could not read.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Repair happens entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.
