How to add page numbers to a PDF

A document without page numbers is hard to discuss: "see page 7" means nothing when the pages are not numbered. Reports, contracts, theses, and manuals all need page numbers, and many PDFs — especially scans and exports from other tools — do not have them. This tool adds page numbers to every page of your PDF, in the format and position you choose.

Drop a PDF and pick a format: a plain number ("1"), "Page 1", or "Page 1 of 10" — the last one is the most useful for a printed document, because the reader always knows how much is left. Choose a position (bottom centre is the standard for books and reports; bottom right suits business documents) and a size. You can also start numbering from a different number, so a chapter that begins on page 5 of a larger document can be numbered 5, 6, 7 instead of 1, 2, 3. Press Add Page Numbers and download the finished PDF.

Everything runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your device. The numbers are drawn onto each page in a clean, readable font, and they do not change the existing content — text, images, and links stay exactly where they were. If a page already has a footer with a number, the new number is placed to avoid overlapping it where possible, but check the result: on pages with a very low margin, the number can sit close to the footer.

A practical tip: if you are numbering a document that will be printed double-sided, bottom centre is the safest position. And if you only want numbers on some pages, split the document first, number the part you need, and merge it back.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?

"Page 1 of 10" is the most useful for printed documents, because the reader always knows how many pages remain. A plain number is the cleanest for on-screen reading.

Can I start numbering from a different number?

Yes. Set the starting number — useful when a chapter begins on page 5 of a larger document and should be numbered 5, 6, 7.

Will the numbers overlap my footer?

The numbers are placed in the bottom margin. On pages with a very low margin they can sit close to an existing footer, so check the result before sending the document on.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Numbering happens entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device.
