How to remove the background from a photo
A clean cutout — a person or product on a transparent background — is useful everywhere: product listings, profile photos, thumbnails, presentations, and social posts. This tool removes the background from a photo directly in your browser, using an AI model that runs on your device. The result is a PNG with a transparent background, ready to use anywhere.
Drop a photo (JPG, PNG, or WebP). First pick a model: General (oRMBG) handles most photos — people, products, animals, and objects — and is the default. People (MODNet) is smaller and faster, but it was built for portraits, so it often finds nothing in a product or animal photo. On first use, the tool downloads the chosen model to your browser (about 44 MB for General, about 6 MB for People) — a one-time download that is cached afterwards. Then it analyses the photo and separates the subject from the background. You will see the original and the cutout side by side, and you can download the transparent PNG. General takes around 15 seconds per photo on a modern device; People takes a few seconds; older phones take longer.
Both models were tested in this browser: on a portrait they give near-identical cutouts, but on a product photo and a photo of a man with two dogs, the People model found nothing at all while the General model cut the subject out. Fine details like loose hair, glass, and fur are harder for either model, and results vary with the photo. A clear subject against a distinct background gives the cleanest cutout; a busy background that matches the subject's colours gives a rougher one. The tool sharpens the edge mask automatically to reduce haze.
Everything runs locally, including the AI model. Your photo is never uploaded — this is the point: the well-known free tool in this category shut its standalone site on 1 December 2026 and moved its users into a paid design app. This tool is the free, private replacement: no account, no credits, no upload, and no expiry. If the result is not clean enough, try a photo with a plainer background, or a closer crop of the subject.
How to use this tool
- 1Drop a photo (JPG, PNG, or WebP) onto the page.
- 2Pick a model: General for most photos, People for portraits only.
- 3Wait while the AI model loads once and removes the background.
- 4Download the transparent PNG.
Frequently asked questions
What photos work best?
Most photos work with the General model: portraits, products, animals, and objects. The People model only works on photos of people — use it when you want the fastest result on a portrait. A clear subject against a distinct background gives the cleanest cutout. Fine hair, glass, and fur are harder.
Why does it download a model on first use?
The AI runs entirely in your browser, so the model file must be downloaded once and is then cached. The General model is about 44 MB, the People model about 6 MB. Your photo is processed locally and never uploaded.
Is it really free? How many photos can I remove?
Yes, free with no account and no credit limit. The only limit is your device: each photo takes a few seconds to process.
What if the result is not clean?
Try the other model first — if the People model found nothing, switch to General. Or try a photo with a plainer background, or crop closer to the subject. Very busy backgrounds and fine hair are the hardest cases for any background remover.
