How to compress an image to a target size

Almost every upload form has a size limit: a profile photo under 200 KB, a product image under 500 KB, a document scan under 1 MB. The usual tools make you guess a quality slider and hope the result fits. This tool does the opposite: you type the target size you want — 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, or any number — and it finds the settings that get as close as possible.

Drop one or more images (JPG, PNG, or WebP). Pick a target size, or type your own. The tool tries different JPEG quality levels, and if quality alone cannot reach the target, it also reduces the dimensions a little, until the file fits. The result is shown next to the original with both sizes, so you can see exactly what you saved. Download each image, or all of them as a ZIP.

Everything runs in your browser, so photos never leave your device. The tool works on photos, screenshots, and scans. PNG images with transparency are converted to JPG on a white background when you choose JPG output, because JPG cannot store transparency; if you need to keep transparency, choose PNG output, which compresses losslessly and may not reach very small targets — the tool will tell you the smallest size it achieved.

A few practical notes. For photos, JPG output at a target of 200–500 KB usually looks nearly identical to the original. For screenshots with text, keep the target higher (500 KB or more) so small text stays readable. If the tool cannot reach a very small target, it is usually because the image has a lot of fine detail; try a slightly larger target rather than accepting a blurry result. And if your source is a PDF, the PDF to JPG tool chains this together with conversion in one click — pick a target size there and the pages come out already compressed.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Drop JPG, PNG, or WebP images onto the page.
  2. 2Type the target size in KB (or pick a preset).
  3. 3Download each image, or all of them as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How does "target size" work?

The tool tries different quality levels (and, if needed, slightly smaller dimensions) until the output lands at or just under your target. You see the final size before downloading, so there is no guessing.

What if my image cannot reach the target size?

Very detailed images have a minimum size. If the target cannot be reached without ruining quality, the tool reports the smallest size it achieved and lets you download that instead.

Does compressing remove transparency?

Only if you choose JPG output, which cannot store transparency — transparent areas become white. Choose PNG output to keep transparency, noting PNG files compress less.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser. Your images never leave your device.
